News

I'm organization chair of ANTS 2012, the Eigth International Conference on Swarm Intelligence, September 12-14, 2012, Brussels, Belgium.

The irace software package for automatic algorithm configuration is now available. It implements various variants of racing algorithms for algorithm configuration.

I'm programme co-chair of MIC 2011, the 9th Metaheuristics International Conference, which was held in Udine, Italy from July 25 to July 28, 2011.

The special issue on Learning and Intelligent Optimization I co-edited has appeared in Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence

The EAF Graphical Tools software is available; it plots summary attainment surfaces and differences between the first-order empirical attainment functions of bi-objective optimizers.

The book Matheuristics-Hybridizing Metaheuristics and Mathematical Programming, edited by Vittorio Maniezzo, Thomas Stützle, and Stefan Voß, is now available.

General Info

I'm a Research Associate of the Belgian FNRS, working at IRIDIA.

I received my "Habilitation" for computer science (2004) and my PhD (1998) from the Computer Science Department of Darmstadt University of Technology, Darmstadt, Germany.

I received my Master's degree (german Diplom) in Business Engineering (Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen) in 1994 from the School of Economics and Business Engineering of the University of Karlsruhe, Germany.

Activities

I'm associate editor of Computational Intelligence and Mathware and Soft Computing and member of the editorial board of the journals European Journal of Industrial Engineering, Evolutionary Computation, Soft Computing, Swarm Intelligence, and International Journal of Applied Metaheuristic Computing. I've recently edited, together with Roberto Battiti and Bart Selman a special issue on Learning and Intelligent Optimization of Annalso of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence.

I'm local organization chair of ANTS 2012 and program co-chair of MIC 2011. I'm a programme committee member of the following events: ECAI 2012, EvoCOP 2012, ICORES 2012, ICAART 2012, LION 6, MAEB 2012, VNS 2012, META 2012, ORBEL, PPSN 2012, VNS 2012, and Matheuristics 2012. Together with Holger Hoos I have created and maintain SATLIB, an online collection of benchmark instances and solvers for propositional satisfiability problems.

Teaching

The second semester of the academic year 2011/12 I'm teaching

Heuristic Optimization, 5 ECTS

The course introduces heuristic techniques for the effective solution of hard decision and optimization problems. A main focus of the course is on stochastic local search methods.
