Muhammad Salman

I am a PhD candidate at IRIDIA, Université Libre de Bruxelles working under the supervision of Dr. Mauro Birattari. I am performing my research in the framework of the DEMIURGE project—a research project funded by the European Commission via an ERC Consolidator Grant. The scope of the DEMIURGE project is the automatic design of robot swarms.
The goal of my research is to develop an intelligent system that takes as an input a description of a collective mission to be accomplished and conceives a robot swarm that can accomplish it. The system will automatically design, in a coordinated way, the hardware and the control software of the robots and will generate the control code.
One of the my main research activities is to design and develop hardware modules for autonomous robots that are more functional in robot swarm applications than single robot applications.

Phormica: pheromone release and detection system

Phormica is a novel system developed to conduct experiments in swarm robotics that enables a swarm of e-puck robots to release and detect artificial pheromone. Phormica emulates pheromone-based stigmergy thanks to the ability of robots to project UV light on the ground, which has been previously covered with a photochromic material.
