Abstract

Aggregation occurs in many arthropods, be it at the level of a single group of a particular species or at the level of mixed groups composed of individuals of different species. Over the last years, there is a revival of interest in consistent inter-individual differences and their effect on the social organisation of a group or a colony. While this has been an old matter as far as eusocial insects are concerned, the question arises whether idiosyncrasy is playing a major role in gregarious species. Furthermore, one may also wonder in this context how mixed species aggregation occurs and what are the collective patterns that can be observed or generated with relatively simple rules. Thanks to experimentally validated mathematical models, extended to take into account idiosyncrasy and the level of interactions between individuals from different species, we show the existence of different aggregation patterns, and a series of counter-intuitive properties generated by the diversity of individuals within a group or by different levels of interactions between individuals from different species.

Short Bio of the Speaker

Stamatios C. Nicolis is a researcher working on self-organization, associated with collective behaviour in biological and bio-inspired systems. His PhD was focused on mathematical modelling in food recruitment and aggregation in ants. He then extended his field of expertise to phenomena involving other organisms, as well as other subjects involving complexity sciences such as financial mathematics or socio-economy. In 2015, he returned back to ULB working at the Center for nonlinear phenomena and complex systems (CENOLI) after several years abroad.
