Abstract

Machine learning and heuristic optimization are two of the most relevant fields within soft computing and computational intelligence in general. Having emerged from separate fields, the collaboration between these two communities has often been lesser than ideal. More recently, important efforts have been seen both in academia and in the industry. In this talk, I will two discuss two such topics, namely prescriptive analytics and automated machine learning, and how promising opportunities bridging learning and optimization are available for future research efforts. At the end of the meeting, I will also share some personal experience on a Ph. D. (at IRIDIA) and how to avoid common pitfalls.

Short Bio of the Speaker

I have joined UFRN (Brazil) in 2017 as an Assistant Professor, after receiving my Ph.D. degree from Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium) in 2016. My thesis on automated design of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms was seminal to my current research on automated machine learning (AutoML). My research interest is bridging the different areas I have addressed over the years, and tackling relevant social challenges such as COVID-19 and misinformation from a multi-disciplinary perspective.
