== Firewall configuration ==
Since the computers are available through direct connections from internet you should protect your machine with a firewall.
Linux provides an integrated mechanism for accepting or rejecting incoming packets.

If you want to setup a good firewall quickly, you may use the following link :
[http://easyfwgen.morizot.net/gen/ Firewall script generator]

'''How to generate the firewall script ?'''

Usually, the interface to internet is eth0. You can check your available interfaces
by typing (as root) :

''# ifconfig -a''

Most of the time, you wish to have an access to the computer, but you still want it
to be secure. The best is to disable any inbound service except SSH. The SSH connections
are encrypted so that you can safely access to the computer even if someone is tcpdumping
your connection.

For the moment, I don't know how to use the Fireparse format. If you know about it
just use it. Otherwise you'll have to take a look at the logs (''/var/log/syslog'') to
monitor the possible network problems or attacks.

Now that you have all the necessary informations, you can generate the firewall script.
Name this script ''iptables'', give it execution rights (''chmod u+x iptables'') and put it under the directory ''/etc/init.d/''.

Be aware that the script loads some iptables modules in your kernel. If you have recompiled your kernel then you
should ensure that the necessary modules are present. If you have statically linked the code to the kernel
then you should remove the modprobe commands in the firewall's script.

Now simply add a symbolic link in the runlevel 2 to this script by typing (as root) :

''# ln -s /etc/rc2.d/S12iptables /etc/init.d/iptables''

You should adapt the number 12 to your needs. The firewall must be run as early as possible.
For example if telnet services are run before it, an attack is still possible. Be careful about this.

If you want to understand more deeply iptables, you can check the following URLs :
== Printer configuration ==

All three printers at IRIDIA (see table "General Information") can be installed as "network printers" on your operating system ([https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/printing/C/printing.html#network Ubuntu 8.10], [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8670.html Mac OS X], [http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/WinXP/printing.html Windows XP]). On *nix-like systems (should work also Mac OS X but if you have problems read next paragraph), the most convenient option is to install the printers using the '''LPD/LPR printing protocol''' and the drivers provided in the table below. These drivers also support some additional (hardware) features installed on the printers as listed in the table "Installable Options". On Windows XP, please install the driver '''before''' setting up a network printer. If asked to specify a "QUEUE", leave it in blank or use the value "raw_queue". The paper size should be set to A4, otherwise printers may get blocked. If you have difficulties, please contact the printers administrator (currently [http://iridia.ulb.ac.be/~mathews/ Nithin Mathews]).

On some Mac (e.g. MacBook with Mac Os X 10.5.6) you could have problems printing in duplex mode (double side) with the Ricoh printers (Gutenberg should be fine). When you add the two printers the system will use the default postscript drivers that do not support duplex mode. Installing the suggested unix drivers does not help. The best solution is to go to the links listed under "Windows / Mac" in the table "Driver" and download the installer and install the proper driver.
== The IRIDIA and the ULB network ==
The IRIDIA system administrator can create an account on the local subnet for you, however, if you want to have access to some of the computer services of the university, you'll need an account on the university network as well. Ask the secretary for the forms and the process.

== Mail configuration ==
Assuming that you have an account on both the local and the university network the mail settings are as follows:
== Firewall configuration ==

[http://www.netfilter.org/ Iptables official website]

[http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.net/iptables-tutorial.html Iptables tutorial and explanations]

[http://lea-linux.org/reseau/iptables.html Setting up a firewall using iptables (in french)]

== Printer configuration ==

== Firewall configuration ==

== Printer configuration ==

All three printers at IRIDIA (see table "General Information") can be installed as "network printers" on your operating system ([https://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/printing/C/printing.html#network Ubuntu 8.10], [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8670.html Mac OS X], [http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/WinXP/printing.html Windows XP]). On *nix-like systems (should work also Mac OS X but if you have problems consult the specific section), the most convenient option is to install the printers using the '''LPD/LPR printing protocol''' and the drivers provided in the table below.
'''Mac Os X'''

On some Mac (e.g. MacBook with Mac Os X 10.5.6) you could have problems printing in duplex mode (double side) with the Ricoh printers (Gutenberg should be fine). When you add the two printers the system will use the default postscript drivers that do not support duplex mode. Installing the suggested unix drivers does not help.

The best solution is to go to the Ricoh website and download the installer.
Here are the websites:
== The IRIDIA and the ULB network ==
The IRIDIA system administrator can create an account on the local subnet for you, however, if you want to have access to some of the computer services of the university, you'll need an account on the university network as well. Ask the secretary for the forms and the process.

== Mail configuration ==
Assuming that you have an account on both the local and the university network the mail settings are as follows:

{| border="1" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"
|-
! Service
! URL
|-
|}

The SMTP server does not require authentication. The POP and IMAP services of ULB accept unsecure connections (no SSL). The POP and IMAP servers of Iridia require secure connections (with SSL).

There are also web interfaces available to read the email if you can not connect to the above servers via POP or IMAP:
Backup Server

Rogrady:

;Backup System

Everyone has 20GB available space on fallopius. You are responsible for backup up your own data into the space you have allocated on fallopius. There is an old automated backup system that is still in place, but no longer supported. It was written by Halva and uses rdiff-backup. Instructions here: [[Old Backup System (Halva's rdiff system)]]. Good luck.

All data on the iridia server is backed up by a separate (supported) nightly script that uses dar. This is an incremental backup program that is like a network version of tar. The scripts are run by the crontab of the user servicebackup on iridia using the script /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/backup.sh. The shell functions that do the meat of the work are included from the file include.sh in the same directory.

The backed up data is stored in the directory are stored on fallopius in the directory /home/iridiaserver/service_backup_dar.
To restore data you will need to familiarise yourself with the dar program, or use the script /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/restore.sh on iridia.

The data that is backed up is divided into 'services'. A list of these services can be found in the directory /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/services. Each service is a directory that must at a minimum contain scripts called <SERVICE_NAME>_backup.sh and <SERVICE_NAME>_restore.sh. These two scripts should make use of the functions provided by the file /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/include.sh which provide wrappers around the dar commands. Optionally, inside each service directory there can be scripts called <SERVICE_NAME>_suspend.sh and <SERVICE_NAME>_resume.sh which will be called before and after the backup, and can be used to stop and start any processes that might interfere with the integrity of the backed up data if they are left running.

A mail gets sent every day to a list of addresses defined in the backup.sh script with the success / failure of the backup in the subject line.

;Troubleshooting

Logfiles for each backup are stored in /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/log on iridia.ulb.ac.be

A quick way of debugging the system is to run the script /home/servicebackup/iridia_service_backup_system/just_test_backup.sh . This script does a test backup of a small directory and outputs to the logfile test.log.

There is an ugly soft link from /usr/lib/libdar.so.3.0.1 -> /home/iridiaserver/dar/lib/libdar.so.3.0.1 This link has been known to disappear after an upgrade of the system.

;svn

The scripting system is maintained and versioned in the svn repository:
file:///usr/local/share/svn_repositories/iridia_service_backup_system

A Wiki is an excellent tool to maintain dynamic information. If you want to add something to this Wiki feel very free contact the system administrator and get an account. It is straight-forward to add and change the information in MediaWiki. Simply press ''edit'' on the top of this page to see how it was done. If you create a link to a non-existing page within this Wiki you can create that page by following the link - of course you would need a login to do so!. Pictures and documents have to be [[Special:Upload|uploaded]] before they can be used on pages. All popular image formats are supported and pdf and ps documents are allowed .

== Network configuration ==
You should get a static IP from the system administrator. Your hostname will be the name of a famous scientist and the domain is ulb.ac.be. Other relevant addresses are:

== Firewall configuration ==

== The IRIDIA and the ULB network ==
The IRIDIA system administrator can create an account on the local subnet for you, however, if you want to have access to some of the computer services of the university, you'll need an account on the university network as well. Ask the secretary for the forms and the process.

== Mail configuration ==
Assuming that you have an account on both the local and the university network the mail settings are as follows:

{| border="1" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0"
|-
! Service
! URL

IRIDIA has a server where users can store their backups. It can be configured to automatically retrieve the data to backup from users' computers during the night.

== Server Information ==

The server name is fallopius.ulb.ac.be and it is in IRIDIA. It will be moved to another building. When? Hard to say...

You need a valid login to access the computer. Ask the system adminstrato to create one for you.

The server has globally 677 Gb available for backup. The HDs are configured according to RAID 5 architecture to assure more realiability and not to lose also your backups!

== How to Access the Server ==

The server can be accessed only via SSH.

== Quota ==

The server is the only machine in IRIDIA which sets quota for the users. Each user has a soft quota of 20 Gb, and a hard quota of 22 Gb. When the soft quota is exceeded, the user has 7 days to reduce its occupied space. After 7 days, or in any case if the hard quota is exceeded, the user account is blocked and the only thing he can do is to remove files.

The system administrator can modify the quota of a user with the command:

edquota -u username

editing the values of the soft and hard limits.

== Manual Backup ==

Using ssh and scp, each user can copy his data on fallopius. Other programs that might be used are [http://www.nongnu.org/duplicity/ duplicity] and [http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/ rdiff-backup].

For example you might use the rsync command like this:

time rsync -a -z -e ssh "/home/user/" user@fallopius.ulb.ac.be:/home/user/remote/ --delete --progress --update

== Automatic Backup ==

The server can be configure to automatically retrieve the data to backup from users' computers. This procedure is described more in detail in the README file that each user finds in his home directory at the first login. Please read that file first, and if you have more doubt ask the system administrator.

Once the setup of an account is completed, the server proceeds to the automatic retrieval of the data each evening at 22:00 on odd days (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and so on). At the end of the procedure, an email is sent to the owner of the accunt with the result of the backup.

=== How to remove old incremental data ===

To remove old data just log in fallopius.ulb.ac.be and give a command similar to the following:

rdiff-backup --force --remove-older-than 2005-12-31 mmanfrin@iridia.ulb.ac.be

(in this example we remove the incremental backups of the machine iridia.ulb.ac.be for the account mmanfrin previous to 31 Dec 2005 )

== Where Does the Name Come from? ==

In IRIDIA we are used to name the computer after famous scientits. We looked for someone who invented something that might be related with the concept of "backup".

A backup is, after all, something that makes you safer, that lets you work without worries. It is a form of protection. In a book published in 1564, "De Morbo Gallico", Gabriello Fallopio (1523-1563), an Italian anatomist, describes a device he used to protect people against venereal illnesses quite common at that time. The device he refers to is the '''condom'''.

Less worthy of note, there are also two organs in the female body named after him: the fallopian tubes.
